Kimberley Art Warmun
The Beginning
- Art at Warnum began with Turkey Thomas in 1974
- Following the death of his Aunt, Mr. Thomas was visited by a 'spirit' which gave him a series of songs and stories.
- Mr. Thomas told these stories to his uncle, Paddy Jaminji, and his uncle painted the stories.
- When Rover Thomas himself began painting his works were extremely powerful and unique.
- One of his pieces sold for $787,000 in 2001. No works of equal standard have been available for some years.
-
The perpetual boom in indigenous art goes on.
-
Warmun Style
- Warnum style works are painted with multi colored ochres on board or canvas.
- Many works are silhouettes of trees or land features outlined in white dots.
-
Look out for Queenie McKenzie's narrative works from Warnum .
